WeChat has updated its Privacy Policy to provide more information about who we share your personal information with, where your personal information is processed, and how we protect your personal information.
Why did WeChat Update its Privacy Policy?
As WeChat strives to provide users with a safe environment and more reliable services, WeChat has expanded its use of cloud infrastructure, consolidated more of its safety and support operations, and continued to develop its anti-fraud capabilities. The update of WeChat’s Privacy Policy reflects these developments and explains them in more detail.
What’s New?
- Where data is stored. WeChat now relies on cloud infrastructure in Malaysia and Singapore. Data for users located in Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR continues to be stored in Hong Kong SAR.
- Who data is shared with. WeChat’s related group company in Malaysia supports its trust and safety operations and helps provide technical and customer support.
- Protection against fraud and scams. In certain jurisdictions, WeChat processes limited information for account safety, anti-fraud and platform integrity purposes in connection with WeChat users’ interoperable interactions with Weixin. This information is kept for short, fixed periods and is used for those purposes only.
- How data is protected. The Privacy Policy now sets out more specific technical and organizational measures that limit unauthorized access and protect personal information during transmission and in storage.
- International transfers. For users in the EEA and the UK, the Privacy Policy now identifies the destination of each data transfer and the appropriate safeguard relied on.
